The Mental Health Bell: A Symbol of Hope

"Cast from shackles which bound them, this bell shall ring out
hope for the mentally ill and victory over mental illness."

—Inscription on Mental Health Bell

In 1953, Mental Health America melted down chains and shackles from asylums across the US originally used to restrain people with mental illness with the vision of creating hope out of heartbreak and cast them into the Mental Health Bell.

The symbol serves as a reminder that we must not be afraid to fight in the open and that the invisible chains of fear, shame, and stigma that binds people who live with mental illness are not definitions of the individual.
