Help us rebuild after the fire and continue our cultural work in Boston and Puerto Rico

About the Campaign

For AgitArte's end of year campaign this year, we decided to focus our request of support for our two physical spaces: Casa Taller Cangrejera (Santurce, Puerto Rico) and our Cultural Work Space in Roxbury, Massachusetts. In the midst of launching this campaign, we received the devastating news that our cultural workspace in Roxbury caught on fire and has suffered significant damages. Thankfully all of our people are safe.

As we have done many times before, we are shifting our work to meet the immediate needs of our community, which in this case means securing long term housing for the residents of the house and ensuring that our people do not suffer the financial burden of this disaster while they are displaced. We are also working to support our staff in replacing personal items such as clothing, equipment, furniture, etc.

Before the fire, we had set a goal of $25,000 for this campaign to support operating costs for Casa Taller Cangrejera and our space in Roxbury, but given these unfortunate circumstances and the additional funds we will need to raise to cover costs related to the fire, we’re asking our community to help us double our initial goal by contributing to both fire relief and to our general operating in Boston and Puerto Rico.

Thank you so much for your support during this challenging time. ¡Seguimos!

AgitArte is an organization of working class artists and cultural organizers who work at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and ideology. Through a praxis of cultural solidarity, creative process and popular education, we initiate and facilitate arts and cultural projects with grassroots communities that contest U.S. cultural hegemony and propose alternatives to existing systems of oppression. We do this in our creative work by centering the experiences of oppressed people in resistance through interdisciplinary storytelling/media, and in our mutual solidarity, through trainings, workshops, and running a physical space for educational programming in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

Construction & Maintenance for Roxbury Cultural Work Space $10,000

Before the fire, we were in the process of making renovations to meet city code requirements and to prepare the space for AgitArte programming. These funds will be used to continue that work, once we rebuild from the fire and rehouse our people. We envision a recording studio, art workshop/studio, artist residencies, a permaculture garden project, and housing for working class artists in our community.
