It's a fact.

New Mexico doesn’t have enough animal sheltering capacity to meet the needs of vulnerable animals and communities across the state. That’s why we’re working hard to ensure our state has expenditure funds to help expand infrastructure and improve the wellbeing of animals. These funds also serve people in our communities and help protect the health and safety of everyone who lives in New Mexico.

Will you join us to ensure the protection of animals is not optional in New Mexico? Your donation is needed right now.

Tiny Syd was born to a homeless cat living in a feral cat colony in Albuquerque. When community members called a veterinary hospital for help dealing with a hungry and unhealthy group of cats in their neighborhood, F.A.T. Katz came to the rescue with a Trap/Neuter/Return program (the proven, most humane method for addressing community cat populations). The adult cats were spayed or neutered and returned to the community, with plans in place for feeding and caring for them. But the kittens needed homes. For Syd, a foster home turned into his forever home and life is now very good: naps in the sun, snacking on his favorite treats, and cuddles with his canine brothers.

While communities in New Mexico rely on animal shelters and rescues, humane law enforcement, and animal welfare programs to support community public health and safety, the fact is that New Mexico’s 40+ animal shelters are continually over capacity. And even recently-built urban shelters have outgrown their capacity. Rural and tribal shelters are even more in need, some even lacking adequate or ANY animal care and control infrastructure.

During this year’s legislative session, we successfully fought for legislation to create the Animal Welfare Program Fund. This law, accompanied by a critical appropriation of $5 million, will help ensure that our state’s animal shelters, animal control and law enforcement agencies, and nonprofit programs are able to function and support the needs of their communities, while reducing intake and euthanasia rates, and keeping everyone safer.

With your support, we won’t stop working towards the day when every kitten, just like Syd, is loved and safe.
