Sophia Henze has raised $2,012 out of their goal of $2,000
Ambassador Sophia Henze plans to kayak or canoe the Green River the first week of October 2023. With the best of company - a couple who has mentored her and her friend Kelly - the four old friends will spend 7 days on the river. They will begin their trip from the town of Green River, Utah, and end at the confluence of the Green River and Colorado River. The route will weave through Stillwater and Labyrinth Canyons in the Canyonlands National Park, totaling 120 miles on the water. Sophia and her friends will be able to experience the abundant ruins and rock art sites of the Ancestral Puebloan people.
Sophia is constantly learning about all the ways she loves to experience the outdoors. Growing up camping the family’s VW camper van morphed into backpacking adventures in college, to now road biking along Southern California’s coastline.
Being able to be wild in the outdoors as a young woman has been incredibly powerful to Sophia. It taught her so much about resilience, personal strength, and brought peace and clarity through challenging times. She hopes to support the next generation of young women to experience that same power of outdoor adventure that she did.
Revenue from this fundraiser will be channeled into The Cairn Project's grants program, offering funding to local groups around the country that are connecting girls and gender expansive youth to opportunities to learn in outdoor spaces. Learn more here.
The Cairn Project acknowledges that we, as settlers past and present, are not the original stewards of the land we occupy and recreate on. Land Acknowledgements are a formal recognition of the original stewards of the land and water and the connections they still carry to these places. They are a simple, meaningful way of showing respect and taking a step toward correcting the stories and practices that continue to erase Indigenous people's history and culture.
