Turtle Love has raised $11 out of their goal of $5,000
How To Help
As part of our outreach and environmental education initiative, Turtle Love leads trips to the nesting beach for classes of local school children. Your donation will fund two children, giving them the opportunity to view and develop a personal connection to living sea turtles.
Illegal egg harvest is one of the major threats to sea turtles Turtle Love seeks to address by maintaining a presence on the nesting beach and involving local community members in the conservation effort. Your donation will support the protection of one nest, helping to ensure the safe development of ~100 hatchlings.
By conducting night surveys and using tags to individually identify nesting sea turtles, Turtle Love tracks sea turtle nesting history and survival rates. Your donation will fund tagging supplies for one sea turtle, contributing to our efforts to provide important information to the Costa Rican government for the management of this nesting beach.
Turtle Love conducts nights surveys to collect data on nesting sea turtles and morning surveys to monitor nests and illegal harvest. Your donation will support our research efforts and help us maintain a presence on the beach to discourage poaching.
Turtle Love empowers local communities by building capacity of young people to work in ecotourism and protect the nesting beach. Your donation will be used to provide a local research assistant with a monthly stipend, providing a sustainable income source that does not rely on harvesting eggs and adult sea turtles.
Our mission is to conserve sea turtles on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica through community involvement, applied research, and liaison with environmental agencies. Turtle Love runs a community-based conservation and ecotourism project working to protect endangered sea turtles nesting on Playa Tres, a 5-km stretch of beach that experiences high rates of poaching.
Illegal harvest of nests and adult green and hawksbill turtles is the primary threat Turtle Love seeks to address. Turtle Love works with residents of local communities to raise awareness and foster development based on sustainable use of sea turtles through ecotourism. By running a monitoring project and maintaining a presence on the beach, we discourage poaching in the short term, and by involving local community members in the conservation effort, we foster long-term change by providing a sustainable income source that does not rely on harvesting eggs and adult sea turtles. Our monitoring activities also provide the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy with data necessary to guide management of this nesting beach.
