12,942 lives have been impacted through Tyler's legacy
As a young man, Fort Pierre high school student, Tyler Wilcox was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of his left knee. Over the years following his diagnosis, he would require over 32 hours of surgical procedures, using over 200 units of blood products. Tyler’s family and friends rallied around him as they experienced firsthand, the generosity of many stranger’s volunteer blood donations, that were keeping Tyler alive.
With a mission to maintain a positive attitude and make the best of a bad situation, Tyler started the effort to organize a replacement blood drive with the goal of “paying back” all the blood products he had used. Just weeks shy of the first blood drive, Tyler passed away, but his impact has endured.
Abbie Arneson, of LifeServe Blood Center, has served on the team of organizers for this drive for many years, “This blood drive all started with Tyler Wilcox, age 23 and battling cancer, saying to his parents ‘Can we have a blood drive to pay back the blood I’ve used?’ One sentence that has led to 12,942 lives touched. Taking something so tragic as the loss of a child and making his wish of paying back come true. The communities of Pierre and Fort Pierre, the first responders, and The Wilcox family and their friends, make this a HUGE life saving event!”.
