Because we all deserve to swim and surf in clean water!

Costa Rican renown surftown Santa Teresa and surrounding beach towns have seen an exponential growth in the past two decades due to the rapidly expanding tourism industry. Hotels, restaurants, rental houses, and other touristic services have been built to respond to the rising demand. Unfortunately, much of this growth has happened without any structure or respect to environmental regulations.

Wastewater management is one of the main issues this town is facing. There is no governmental centralized sewage system. Water treatment relies solely on the individual responsibility of residents and business owners, most of which have low environmental awareness and very little knowledge of water treatment systems. Houses and businesses dumping their grey and black water into poorly-built septic systems, or directly into the ground or waterways is a common practice across town; many businesses and houses lack proper treatment systems, creating serious consequences for the area’s water quality.

Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper is currently fundraising to expand its water quality monitoring capacity with a new water testing equipment that will allow us to test for fecal contamination WEEKLY for the most populated surfing points! The results will be shared and available for free to all, locals and visitors, through the SwimGuide App to inform safe beach going year-round. 

As part of their socio-environmental responsibility, lab equipment distributor company DIXXLAB has given us a 50% discount on their IDEXX Tecta high technology equipment. This equipment provides fully automated microbiological water tests for fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, and fecal enterococcus, indicators of fecal pollution in water, in less than 24 hours!

First goal: to raise $20,000 to buy the equipment and secure the weekly testing of two ocean points for the first year.  

Once we have the equipment, we will continue fundraising to secure funds to add more testing points in Santa Teresa, Malpaís, Hermosa, and Manzanillo.  

The results of this more consistent testing will not only be useful for swimmers/surfers to know if the water is clean, but will also help to raise awareness amongst the local businesses and residents encouraging them to take action and improve their water treatment systems to reduce their impact on water.

¡Porque todos merecemos nadar y surfear en agua limpia!

La reconocida localidad de surf Santa Teresa en Costa Rica ha experimentado un crecimiento exponencial en las últimas dos décadas debido a la rápida expansión de la industria turística. Se han construido hoteles, restaurantes, casas de alquiler y otros servicios turísticos para satisfacer la creciente demanda. Desafortunadamente, gran parte de este crecimiento ha ocurrido sin estructura alguna ni respeto por las regulaciones ambientales.

La gestión de aguas residuales es uno de los principales problemas que enfrenta esta localidad. No existe un sistema de tratamiento centralizado por parte del gobierno. El tratamiento del agua depende únicamente de la responsabilidad individual de los residentes y propietarios de negocios, la mayoría de los cuales tienen una conciencia ambiental baja y conocimientos muy limitados sobre sistemas de tratamiento de aguas. Es común que casas y negocios viertan sus aguas grises y negras en sistemas sépticos mal construidos, o directamente en el suelo o cuerpos de agua, lo que crea graves consecuencias para la calidad del agua en la zona.

Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper está recaudando fondos actualmente para ampliar su capacidad de monitoreo de la calidad de agua con un nuevo equipo de monitoreo de agua que nos permitirá detectar la contaminación fecal SEMANALMENTE en los puntos de surf más concurridos. Los resultados se compartirán y estarán disponibles de forma gratuita para todos, tanto locales como visitantes, a través de la aplicación SwimGuide para que todos estemos informados sobre la calidad del agua en que nos estamos bañando.

Como parte de su responsabilidad socioambiental, la empresa distribuidora de equipos de laboratorio DIXXLAB nos ha dado un descuento del 50% en su equipo de alta tecnología IDEXX Tecta. Este equipo realiza pruebas microbiológicas totalmente automatizadas, para coliformes fecales, Escherichia coli y enterococos fecales, indicadores de contaminación fecal en el agua, ¡en menos de 24 horas!

Primer objetivo: recaudar $20,000 para comprar el equipo y garantizar las pruebas semanales en dos puntos del océano durante el primer año.

Una vez que tengamos el equipo, continuaremos recaudando fondos para asegurar recursos y así agregar más puntos de muestreo en Santa Teresa, Malpaís, Hermosa y Manzanillo.

Los resultados de estas pruebas más consistentes no solo les serán útiles a los nadadores/surfistas para saber si el agua está limpia, sino que también ayudarán a crear conciencia entre los negocios locales y los residentes, alentándolos a tomar medidas y mejorar sus sistemas de tratamiento de agua para reducir su impacto en el agua.
