Beer and Culture Event #1: Defining a Vision
Join us for the first of three free and open to the public panel discussions that will inform the way we spend the $2.2M USDOT and Washington State grants for planning the lid over I-5. The events will cover how we collectively set project goals and go about the work, build excitement and partnerships in the community, and discuss how the lid fits within Seattle’s urban context. You can learn more about the scope and goals for the grant by reading the grant application narrative, here. The Technical Feasibility Report, completed in 2020 with the previous scope between Thomas and Madison Streets, can be found here.
There will be a no-host bar and snacks. The panel discussions will be video-recorded and made available to all.
The Beer and Culture Events are paid for solely by Lid I-5 and are not part of the $2.2M grant. We are volunteers and depend on your generosity to produce them. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation when you register or at the event.
We would like to thank our collaborators the Seattle Parks Foundation and Allied Arts Seattle for their valuable advice and organizational support.
The Panelists
Dorothy Faris, ASLA, Partner Mithun (Moderator)
Dorothy has worked on a variety of public and private projects across the Western United States. Her ability to think across scales—from master planning large sites to specifics of construction details—informs her project work. She values collaboration from the beginning of the project, working closely with the architecture and interiors team, consultants and stakeholders, to assure a seamless blending of site, structure and community. Her collaborative and conceptual approach makes her a valuable member of our integrated team.
Ben Franz, Partner and Senior Project Manager Shiels Obletz Johnsen
Ben joined SOJ in 2017 after 15 years of leading two iconic historic destinations through major capital projects, new construction, and community revitalization efforts. As Executive Director of the Pike Place Market, Ben led the successful completion of a $68 million renovation of the historic Market while maintaining operations for the hundreds of small independent businesses. Ben also fulfilled a 40-year-long vision to develop the last parcel in the Market’s Historic District. He helmed the $75 million MarketFront Project from concept through grand-opening, including lease-up of commercial spaces and low-income housing.
Donna Moodie, Chief Impact Officer, Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle
Born in Jamaica, raised in Chicago, and now a resident of Seattle for over 20 years, Donna Moodie is well acquainted with the interconnectedness of social justice, community building, and neighborhood activism. Her passion for service and bringing communities together presents itself in her work with the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. Donna serves on Arte Noir’s Board, the Grist Board, the Seattle Foundation Board and the Chamber Board. She participates in the Central Area and Capitol Hill Land Use Review Committees, has served on several Mayoral commissions and task forces, and the Seattle Center Advisory Commission.
