Inside SDPD's Community Oriented Policing

Join us for the next Safety For All session as we go into San Diego’s neighborhoods with SDPD officers to learn about “Community Oriented Policing," followed by a live Q&A with Assistant Chief Terence Charlot.

Community Oriented Policing is an approach to public safety that puts relationships with community members at the center of policing efforts. This best practice of law enforcement was established  in San Diego decades ago and has proven effective both in building trust with community members as well as preventing and solving crimes. During this session, you will see and hear about:

  • Neighborhood initiatives that make homes, businesses, and public spaces safer for all
  • Programs that pair kids and cops to serve at-risk youth
  • The role of a Community Resource Officer
  • How relationships between police and community members enhance public safety

.

Examples of Community Oriented Policing

A great example of the community and police working together is the annual National Night Out. Residents in neighborhoods throughout San Diego and across the nation, are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside porch lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods throughout San Diego host a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities, and anti-crime and anti-drug rallies.

Revitalized Neighborhood Watch programs consist of community coordinators, watch coordinators, and block captains all working toward a common goal: safer neighborhoods.

Coffee with a Cop brings police officers and the community members they serve together-over coffee-to discuss issues and learn more about each other.

About The Safety For All Series

There could not be a more important time for the community to understand the work SDPD does, how, and why. With this in mind, the San Diego Police Foundation has produced its new virtual series, Safety For All, which will take you "behind-the-scenes" with SDPD to see how our local police are recruited and trained to perform a wide range of duties from emergency response to crime solving. This eye-opening, unforgettable experience is provided as a community service so that, together, we can create a safer San Diego.
