UNBREAKABLE TRADITIONS: A CELEBRATION OF SPRING & EASTERN EUROPEAN EGG DECORATING

SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2025 | 12:00PM - 3:00PM

Join us for a special celebration of spring at the Bohemian National Hall on Saturday, April 12, 2025, as the Tulipán Foundation and the Czech Center New York come together to celebrate traditions deeply cherished in both Hungarian and Czech cultures. Much like our beloved Family Easter celebrations in past years, this beautiful cultural experience will feature talented artists who will share their expertise in traditional egg decorating techniques, offering everyone a hands-on opportunity to create their own.

In light of the ongoing egg shortage, we have chosen to use high-quality wooden eggs this year, providing guests with a lasting keepsake to treasure. As part of this decision, the Tulipán Foundation has partnered with City Harvest to donate the equivalent cost of 1,000 eggs to help fight food insecurity in New York City—proudly honoring tradition while making a meaningful impact on our community.

Throughout the afternoon, both children and adults will explore their creativity while learning about the history and significance of traditional egg decorating. Ildikó Fekete, an award-winning egg decorator and Tulipán grantee, will teach the wax-resist technique and share insights from her research into Czech egg decorating. Ilona Szelesné Kása will guide participants through an eco-friendly technique using plant-based dyes made from ingredients like red cabbage and onion skins. Emőke Berkovics will showcase the drop pull technique, a traditional method for creating geometric and floral designs with beeswax.

Alongside this flurry of activity, a small display of decorated eggs will highlight each of these three techniques, offering a visual showcase of the skill and beauty involved in these traditional crafts. Guests will also have the opportunity to indulge in the flavors of the season with fresh challah and other Hungarian specialties. A goodie bag hunt will add to the fun for our youngest guests, ensuring that everyone leaves with something special. Whether you have deep Hungarian roots or are simply looking to try something new, this celebration of spring traditions offers something for all.
