Student Learning During COVID-19
Student Learning During COVID-19
As a result of prolonged school closures, students across the country are losing out on substantial learning time. This will have a direct impact on fundamental skill-building and grade-level learning goals, particularly in core subjects like math and reading.
As in many areas of society, the disruption will have an especially profound impact on students in underserved communities, particularly in households that lack the resources to supplement students’ continued education. Educators and parents are now faced with the challenge coordinating remote learning and combating this learning loss.
As part of an effort to support students and families in our communities, Learn Fresh is shipping NBA Math Hoops games and curriculum materials, at no cost, directly to households in need of resources for in-home learning.
The NBA Math Hoops board game is a fun, fast-paced, challenging game for 2-4 players. Two teams compete to score points through the successful completion of core math operations, using the real statistics of NBA and WNBA players. Gameplay features high-volume repetition of arithmetic, percentages, fractions, and graphing in a fast-paced and challenging environment that requires students to analyze statistical data in order to craft sound strategies and score points. NBA Math Hoops is best suited for students in grades 4-8 but can be enjoyed by anyone, and is especially well-suited for family-based learning.

Learn Fresh is a transformative nonprofit that empowers educators with innovative STEM learning experiences built around sports and entertainment. Students who engage in Learn Fresh programs discover a new way of learning that is fun, highly engaging, and results in academic and social-emotional growth.
Nationwide, 82% of low-income students are not proficient in math by the eighth grade -- a stat that Learn Fresh is working to change. Our flagship program, NBA Math Hoops, leverages the game of basketball to provide 4-8th grade students with a powerful and exciting learning experience, building fundamental math and social emotional skills that are crucial to success in high school STEM courses.
I've worked for Learn Fresh as a Development Specialist since 2016, and was involved in the early stages of the organization in Providence in 2013-14. It's been exciting to be apart of the growth of the organization, watching it develop from a pilot program in Rhode Island to a national organization. We're currently partnered with 25 NBA, WNBA, MLB, and NFL teams, and to date have served over 250,000 students.
