Why 40for40 Project

This is a year-long celebration of life, movement, and people.  It's about taking advantage of the time we have on earth to connect to our bodies, minds and each other while raising awareness and funds for causes we hold near and dear.

Help me create more outdoor connections for youth!

40 for 40!

My name is Willie McBride and I'm an athlete/adventurer and small-business owner in Portland, Oregon who is passionate about helping provide outdoor opportunities for youth.  I know firsthand the therapeutic value and sense of empowerment that comes from time spent in nature, and strongly believe that everyone should have access to transformative experiences in the outdoors.

This year, for my 40th year of life, I really wanted to go all-out and celebrate life, movement, and people, especially after the past 2.5 years of the pandemic.  I decided to not just do a few awesome adventures but 40 instead, spread out over the entire year--from March 17th, 2022 to March 16th, 2023.

I've already completed 6 of the 40:

1) Catalina Island Traverse (25 miles from Two Harbors to Avalon)

2) LA Marathon

3) Three Sisters Traverse (hut-to-hut cross country ski route)

4) Gorge Waterfalls 50k

5) Full Bright Angel Traverse, Grand Canyon (47 miles Rim to Rim to Rim via a historic variation)

6) Vancouver Marathon

There are 34 more objectives ahead so stay tuned and follow along to hear what they are! :)

I'll be posting on my Instagram account after each event and my friends at Trail Butter will be sending out monthly updates as well.  I hope people follow along, get inspired to get out and get after in their own lives, and donate to Big City Mountaineers along the way as they are able.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout the pandemic, Big City Mountaineers has reflected upon the transformative power of a personal connection with the outdoors. Now, more than ever, BCM’s work to break down barriers to outdoor access is helping to ensure the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of young people across the country.

Please join me to create a meaningful impact for these students!
