Many people have a direct connection to the Y from childhood. I love to hear their stories and how this organization has been a part of you and your families’ history.
As someone raised in rural Bavaria, Germany, I don’t share that same connection. Mine is based on the YMCA’s work today and how it reaches into the fabric of our communities and is aligned with some of the values of the people of Hawaii. Here is what I mean:
As a humble and very much still beginner student of Hawaiian culture, I have started to look to the works of Mary Kawena Pukui. While many people know who she is and how instrumental her work is to Hawaii, I also know that many may not.
Briefly, Mary Kawena Pukui was a Kawena, a Hawaiian scholar, and one of the foremost cultural authorities, linguists, storytellers, translators, composers, hula masters, and teachers. She wrote over 52 books and articles; over 150 songs and chants.
A central theme of her work is the importance of looking to the source to understand and appreciate the depth of Hawaiian culture.
One of her masterworks is called ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian proverb), a book of Hawaiian proverbs and poetical sayings. Nānā i ke kumu." means to Look to the source.
So what is the source? It is our kupuna; it is the people of Hawai’i’sr history. Another important concept passed on is the idea that children, like streams, grow strong and pure when their source (family, community, and environment) is well cared for. It reminds us to nurture the foundation of a child's life to ensure their well-being and growth.
So, as I think about the work of the YMCA of Honolulu - focusing on the needs of the community and focusing on both our kupuna (elderly) and our keiki (children) - it is easy for me to relate and make a connection to the work the YMCA of Honolulu does. This is my “Y” for supporting this organization through volunteerism and fundraising, and this is why I am asking you to help me support YMCA of Honolulu by making a donation through my page.
