Creating equitable access to eating disorder treatment

for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color

Project HEAL’s BIPOC Treatment Equity Project is specifically dedicated to connecting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to accessible, quality eating disorder treatment. Research shows that ethnic minorities struggle at the same rates as their white counterparts, but are exponentially less likely to be diagnosed, supported, treated, or given any opportunity to recover. Contrary to biases and assumptions, eating disorders are not a “white woman problem” and Project HEAL is committed to breaking down the barriers that BIPOC uniquely experience to full eating disorder recovery.

How does this Treatment Equity Project work?

>> Insurance Navigation to help BIPOC individuals with insurance optimize their existing coverage, understand their benefits, and/or advocate for a Single Case Agreement when necessary.

>> Treatment Placements for BIPOC individuals unable to access the appropriate level of care through their insurance or other means. Thanks to the generosity of our HEALers Circle network, providers donate care to a set number of beneficiaries each year.

>> Cash Assistance for BIPOC individuals needing help closing the financial gap to treatment. Through this program we help pay down high deductibles, co-pays, or out of pocket expenses, in addition to travel or other tertiary costs associated with going to treatment.

>> Expanding our HEALers Circle by partnering with more BIPOC providers. Our goal is that our beneficiaries have the privilege of receiving treatment from people with multiple layers of shared experience.
