About the Trek
This October, a group of travel professionals will lace up their hiking boots and take on the tallest peak in North Africa, Mount Toubkal, to raise money for ABTA LifeLine and Planeterra.
Led by adventure travel expert, G Adventures, the four day challenge will see the group visiting local Berber communities as they make their way to the summit of the mountain.
G Trek for Good background
Back in 2019, global adventure operator, G Adventures launched their first G Trek For Good with the aim of raising money to help communities and, in November 2019, nine members of the travel industry summited the highest peak in Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro. Throughout the pandemic, the funds raised from this were directed to support local communities who were in desperate need as their income from tourism grounded to a halt. The money was able to provide food and medicine for local communities supported by G Adventures and Planeterra around the world.
Where will the money go?
Planeterra: Tourism is an $8 trillion global industry, but many local businesses and communities do not benefit from it. There are some forms of tourism where $0 reaches the hands of local people. Planeterra is G Adventures’ non-profit partner, which is working to break this cycle by supporting local communities in some of the world’s poorest countries, helping them to harness and benefit from global tourism. 50% of the money raised through the trek will go to supporting local communities through Planeterra's work, helping to create economic opportunities for locals and protect the places and cultures celebrated through travel.
ABTA LifeLine: ABTA LifeLine is ABTA’s charity for past and present employees of ABTA Members. Money raised will help the charity provide much needed support for those in the travel community who are experiencing financial hardship due to redundancy, relationship breakdown, domestic violence and bereavement among many other things.
