By working at Positive Impact Health Centers, I get to see firsthand the difference made in the lives of the individuals we serve and the greater impact on the Atlanta community.
Patients and clients facing their own fears and stigma have given me the courage to face my own fear. During the first year of COVID-19 lock down, I counted those long days in many ways. One of those ways was the last time I saw a live drag show. The online shows were great but doesn't compare to a live show raising money for a nonprofit. Yes, I love drag shows and the hearts of the drag performers.
My older two kids have always been present at shows and tipping before even being able to walk. Because of COVID-19 lock down, my youngest (then 2 years old) was really missing out of this form of art, advocacy, and activism.
I wrote a children's book about drag queens just for him. We read it together many nights as I told him stories of local performers and performances The book captures the way they change the community.
For the last two years, I have wanted to send this book to a few children's book publishers but paralyzed by the fear of rejection.
I have been inspired by the beautiful children's books now available in bookstores on social justice. But, yet, still stuck in the fear of rejection.
If I meet my fundraising goal for PIHC, I will hit send. I will do it. I will hold my breath and wait for the email rejection.
